Design

As designers we...
"Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works." - Steve Jobs

Our design and technology curriculum at Hilperton

At Hilperton, we believe that Design and Technology (DT) provides children with essential opportunities to be creative, practical and innovative. using the Kapow Primary DT scheme, our curriculum is carefully designed to help children develop a wide range of skills, ensuring clear progression through Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

It is built around the following six key areas:

  • Cooking and nutrition: discovering where food comes from; creating a balanced diet; following kitchen hygiene and safety; developing preparation and cooking skills; following a recipe
  • Mechanisms: using cams, followers, levers and sliders to mimic natural movements
  • Structures: learning about the properties of materials; improving a structure's strength and stability, reinforcing structures.
  • Textiles: using fabric techniques to fasten, sew and decorate
  • Electrical systems: creating electrical products using series circuits, circuit components, circuit diagrams and symbols (Key Stage 2 only).
  • Digital world: programming products to perform tasks; developing 2D and 3D designs and models using CAD software (Key Stage 2 only)

Within each of these areas, there are four key strands which children revisit continually to build their understanding. These are designing, making, evaluating and developing technical knowledge.

DT lessons encourage teamwork, problem-solving. critical thinking and creativity. Children learn how to take risks and so become more innovative and resourceful. Children often work together, sharing ideas and learning from one another as they design, make and evaluate.
