Phonics & Early Reading

Phonics and early reading
We follow the government approved systematic synthetic phonics programme Sounds Write to teach early reading and phonics. This structured approach gives children the essential building blocks they need to become confident, fluent readers (and writers).
Phonics is taught in daily 30-minute whole year group sessions from Reception through to Year 2. Beyond Key Stage 1 , children who need additional support receive targeted interventions to help secure their phonics knowledge.
Children are taught to:
  • Recognise sounds (phonemes) and link them to letters (graphemes)
  • Blend sounds to read words
  • Segment words
  • Manipulate sounds to understand how words work
As children move through the scheme, they learn that:
  • The same sound can be spelled in different ways
  • The same spelling and represent different sounds
These skills are practised daily through reading and writing activities, giving children regular opportunities to apply what they have learned.
All staff delivering phonics are fully trained in the Sounds Write programme to ensure consistent, high-quality teaching across the school. The school also has close links with The Ramsbury English Hub.
Children's progress is closely monitored, and interventions are put in place and regularly reviewed to ensure every child received the support they need.
