“We soar high on wings like eagles”

Reading

As readers, our children share a joy of reading. Reading helps us to gain knowledge, enhances imagination and inspires us in all aspects of our lives.

Our Reading Curriculum at Hilperton

At Hilperton Primary, we hope and strive to build a love of reading in every child. We believe that every child has a right to become a fluent, confident reader. Therefore, we ensure that reading is a collective experience shared from classroom to classroom and throughout our educational journey.

At Hilperton, our curriculum has reading at its very core. Books inspire learning throughout the whole curriculum. Children enjoy engaging with challenging texts and are encouraged to respond to what they read. This approach encourages reading for purpose, connecting subjects and giving students a real-world context for learning. We truly believe inspiration for great writing comes from exposure to great authors.

In our learning environments, children have access to their own class library, as well as our beautiful, well-stocked school library, which offers a wide range of books to suit all interests and abilities.

Children take part in daily timetabled reading lessons where they:

  • Build fluency through regular practice
  • Hear texts being read aloud, where teachers model expression and enjoyment
  • Develop their vocabulary and critical thinking skills
  • Read a wide range of texts across genres and subjects
  • Explore a variety of comprehension questions to deepen their understanding

We encourage children to read not only to learn, but also for pleasure and enjoyment. Children have regular opportunities to just read and enjoy a book together. From books comes rich vocabulary, key themes, diversity, problems to solve, a deeper understanding of our social and emotional selves along with the opportunity for our children to build Cultural Capital — the essential knowledge they need to become educated citizens.

At Hilperton, reading is more than a skill — it is a gateway to imagination, knowledge and lifelong learning.
